Wireless broadband network question

If I have a wireless modem/router connected to my BT socket, can I have a
PCI wireless card connected to my PC in another part of the house to receive
my Broadband signal from the modem?

I also have my Xbox in another room and i'm assuming that if I get a
wireless bridge connected to it, I can also receive the broadband signal to
that too from the modem for Live.

What i'm after is a set up where the modem/router is connected direct to my
BT socket and everything else are in different rooms receiving the signal
without any wires.

Is this possible or does there have to be an ethernet cable going to to PC
from the modem?

Thanks in advance?

Jason

Its all possible without an ethernet cable going to the PC from the modem.

The only thing to note, is that if you need to upgrade the firmware of the
Wireless modem/router, the manufacturers often advise you to do this by
ethernet cable and not wirelessly from your PC (though this still normally
still works fine)

However, your ADSL modem doesn't have to be connected to the ADSL/BT socket,
while you update the firmware, so that shoudn't be that much of an issue.

Sunil

Most routers will have, say, four ethernet sockets and wireless
connectivity.

I've a wireless modem/router sitting on the shelf just above where I'm
sitting now. The kids PCs are in their bedrooms upstairs, with wireless PCI
cards and both connected to the internet. Works a treat.

Yep, works well but does depend on the building you are in. I have a mix of
both wired (local to the router as this gives me 100MB Ethernet) and
wireless (for other machines around the house).

Thanks for all the advice.

So am I ok to say that neither my PC or Xbox have to have a wired connection
to the ASDL modem connected to my BT socket?

Anyone care to recommend a combined ASDL Router/modem, Wireless PCI card for
the PC & Wireless Bridge for the Xbox?? (need to ensure all the hardware is
happy with Xbox Live)

Cheers

Once the ADSL modem / router is set up it doesn't need any computer wired to
it.
If you want to have piece of mind and rock solid connection get Draytek
Vigor 2600G.
I have set up mine up in the attic in May and haven't seen it since.
Yes, there are cheaper ones, if you don't mind updating the firmware every
few weeks and resetting it just as often e.g. Netgear.

PCI wifi cards don't always work well, the computer case can easily shield
the signal.
Consider using an USB wifi adapter on a end of cable, much easier to
position for best signal, half an inch can make a difference.
Often placing it 5' high improves reception. I use Orinoco (by Proxim).

I am no gamer, but as wifi connection is simplex (only in one direction at
the time), you would be better off with wired connection for the Xbox.
Regards,
Martin

Sorry, I should have added this to my mail.

I can also recommend the 2600G. By no means the cheapest but it does seem
excellent. As with Martin, mine is in the attic at the front of the house
and I can get a useful connection not only to the ground floor at the back
of the house (just) but also right into the back garden which is 8 foot
lower than the house.

Also, as the Vigor has twin, removable aerials, it is possible to easily
extend the range by using an extension cable and/or a better areal on one
or both of the connectors.

I also agree with Martin's comments on the adapter, I brought a cheap 11Mb
USB adapter (D-Link DWL-122) so that I didn't waste too much money if it
didn't work very well. However, it does work well! Having the aerial on a
wire means that you can move it - often just an inch or so - to get a much
better connection.

Can't comment on the gaming I'm afraid as I haven't tried it and I can't
confirm Martin's comments regarding half-duplex connections. However, since
you can play most of these games over the Internet with very variable
connections, it is probably worth having a go - at lest if it means that
you haven't got to redecorate to install some cabling (and possibly every
time you move the room around).
