Wireless Broadband Connection problem

Here's the situation:
I have Windows XP (home edition) and I have just purchased from BT a
BT Voyager 2100 Wireless ADSL Router along with a BY Voyager 1040
Wireless Adapter.

Although everything appears to be installed correctly and all
appropriate lights on the router are illuminated I have "wirless
network connection unavailable". But usually a few minutes after pc
power up the connection suddenly becomes available. This connection
usually lasts between 30 secs to 2 mins before disappearing. The
connection may return again in the same fashion, but it could be
anything from 5 mins to 1 hour before that happens.

I have uninstalled everything, and then reinstalled but I have the
same problem. The router and my pc are only about 15 feet apart (hall
to living room)

The BT technical helpline is 50p / minute and I have little confidence
in them as they originally sent me a wired adapter for use with the
wireless router.

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Steve J

Wireless connections can be a bit like that, mine got cut off three
times earlier this evening but re-connected after a minute or two.

Things worth trying are:

-try and get the aerial on the WAP as high as possible, in clear air
and with no metal/magnetic objects too close.

-keep it away from DECT 'phones, they use the same frequency range (so
do other things like microwaves).

-try a different channel in case there is interference, my Linksys
defaults to channel 6 but I seem to get a better connection on channel
11.

-the signal degrades rapidly with walls in between, my Linksys can
manage one wall, is very weak with two and dead with three.

It is possible the kit is defective but if you are able to connect then
it's probably OK you probably just need to experiment with positioning.

what signal strength / connection speed shows on the systray icon

do you use the inbuilt windows stuff for wireless networking or its
own interface

tried channel 1 or 13 to get away from possible conflict with
neighbour or interference ?

is there an IEE802.1x security setting that you can turn off, or other
encryption stuff that you perhaps aren't using.

review of its sister product at
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware...q3/bt-2000.asp may
help. Upgraded firmware at www.voyager.bt.com perhaps ?
