I have a Linksys EtherFast Wireless Cable/DSL Router BEFW11S4 which due to
cable broadband is stuck in the upstairs bedroom at the back of the house.
There is a wireless pc in the front bedroom which gets a very good signal
from it.

THE PROBLEM : I have a wireless equiped laptop. Which when in the kitchen
(directly under the router / back bedroom) the laptop gets a 50% signal
which is fine. With the laptop in the lounge the signal is weak.

I have worked that i need a reapeter of some sorts to place in the kitchen
to relay a signal to the lounge ! (is that right)
I have looked at the linksys WET11 PDF maunel and this just seems to be a
ethenet brigde and all the examples in the manuel show it attached to a hub
& not just use to extent the range to other wirless devices.

Am I missing some thing. !!

Your help and comment would be very welcome

Thanks
ADAM

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make a reflector.

Take a 50cm square box.
Cut diagonally in half to form a pyramid. line with foil, place with open
end towards rest of
house, place router so the antennas are around 30cm out from the peak.

This reflects the signals towards the rest of the house, rather than most
bouncing away.

I am more familiar with rf than I am with this new technology, but, you
indicated that the rf router is in an upstairs room and the computer, that
gets a good signal, is directly below it.

RF tends to radiate broadside to the antenna's radiating element. If the
antenna is vertical the rf propagation should be mostly horizontal. If the
receiver that gets good coverage is below the transmitter then you are more
likely getting a bouncing effect off something horizontally away from the
transmitter, for example a nearby building.

Question: Where is the lounge with relation to the upstairs room? What is
the building constructed of? Are we talking about a house, what is it made
of, or office building?

Great answer !!! Larry was right about the reflection . try a piece of
aluminum foil above or behind the BEFW.
Also the router has a setting for 2 antenna settings . try diversty spread
or left only and see if that helps

Adding a reflector is a good idea. A better idea is adding a reflector that
was intelligently designed. See: http://www.freeantennas.com/
