Hi
I'd like to be able to have wireless internet access in my home but
need some basic advice. All i want to do is use my laptop around my
home to connect to the internet. Please can someone help?
I have a centrino laptop so it's 802.11b wifi enabled.
I have BT Broadband and connect with a BT Voyager 100 USB ADSL modem.
Do i now simply need a wireless broadband router? What are the
differences between models? Should i be looking out for anything in
terms of speed/performance etc.? Would any be compatible with my BT
Broadband connection?
I have some credit with a US website so am hoping to get one from
there. For example:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...Tab=1&NoMapp=0
Would this work?
Many thanks
Steven Mills

Yes, just get a wireless broadband router that has an ADSL modem and then
throw the Voyager USB.

Well you have (in the main) routers compatible with either 11b or 11g. 11b
runs at 11mbit/s max (theoretical) whereas 11g runs at 54mbit/s max
(theoretical, again). You have to make the choice on speed. 11g is more
expensive but faster. 11g also supports 11b cards if you wanted to have a
11g router but 11b cards and then upgrade to g cards later.

If you are just browsing the internet then 11b is fine. Only need bother
with 11g if you're doing lots of filesharing

See above

As long as it has a built-in ADSL modem

I'd guess at no due to different technologies on phonelines but hopefully
someone else can confirm this.

Yes it DOES work. I have the 604+ which works like a dream and has a
built in ADSL Modem. THe phoneline doesn't matter. The protocols it
supports DOES.

Okay as long as you can confirm that (and bought it from the US). I've heard
some horror stories involving D-Link and US firmware but as long as it works
for you.

I justt want to clarify that the 604+ will work on an ADSL line by itself...

However, the 514 model that the OP linked to above does not have a built-in
ADSL modem though - hence I would advise him not to get it..

Sunil

Perhaps an irrelevant question, but surely also it will come with a
transformer for a US 120V system and the wrong plug layout?

Thanks to all for your comments.
Spoke to someone who suggested that i don't need a router, just a
wireless access point. So does anyone have any idea if this model
would work?:

Thanks
