wireless-b kit wizzard can't program base station due to firewall

I just bought a "Wireless-B Kit" and was trying to install
it on my WindowsME system using the wizzard.

I have SBC DSL service that uses EnterNet 300 PPPoE to
access SBC using a SpeedStream 5100 modem.

I get to the point in the installation where the base
station is installed and then the wizzard is supposed to
program the base station, with theh password, etc.

But I get an error that it can't update the base station
because some firewall or security software is already
running and so it can't program the base station.

It says to remove all firewall and security programs and
reset the base station.

So I removed parental control program from SBC and removed
my antivirus program. Then tried to reinstall, and got the
same error.

SO has anyone else solved this problem?

This mght have already been covered, but I didn't see a
search button anywhere.

TIA, JW

First, make sure you've updated the firmware:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/br...Downloads.aspx and
then make sure you're using the right criteria for entering the information:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=MSbbn

I read the other messages about this and here is what I
have done so far.

First I reset the basestation and turned it off and
connected my PC directly to the speedstream 5100 modem,
then I turned on the PC to restart the installation from
the get-go.

I put the installation CD in the reader and started
setup.exe and followed directions until I reached
the "firewall problem" screen. By this time the
basestation has been connected as the intermediary between
the dsl modem and the PC.

Then I cancelled the wizzard and started up IE and
accessed the basstation manager at http://192.168.2.1 .
Then I entered my SBC DSL account name and password, set
the other options, etc., and logged out of the basestation
manager.

Then I closed IE and then restarted it and accessed
various web sites with no problems.

I also fired up Netscape 7.1 and did the same thing and
everything worked fine, i.e I was connected to the web.

HOWEVER, now there is a BIG problem, as now I cannot get
my PC applications to start up. IOW when I click on any
other applications, they will not execute.

For example, if I click on the Windows Explorer icon it
does not start. Then if I alt-cntl-del to see what's
happening, it says "Explorer(is not respondong)". This
also happens to lock up the computer, but if I "End Task"
on the Windows Explorer, then this releases the PC to
operate again.

Another problem is once the installation is done, I shut
down the PC to refresh everything. Then once I restart the
PC and it's reconnected to the internet, if I start up IE,
then this freezes up the PC again, and doing cntl-alt-del
shows that IE and Explorer are both "Not Responding". Then
if I End Task on both of these then the PC will refresh
both close the "Active Desktop". Then I have to reboot the
PC because everything is frozen.

This freeze-up does not happen if I start up Netscape 7.1,
it just happens with IE (I have v. 6.0).

Windows Explorer is always involved in the freeze-up. If I
click its icon or startup IE, then "Explorer(not
responding)" occurs and the PC jumps into "Active Desktop"
inactivated and the freeze-up happens. Then if I End-task
on the "Explorer(not responding)" then screen refreshes,
but I can only shut-down then.

If I check the Microsoft Networking application, start-
>programs->microsoft wide are networking (or whatever), it

says the address of the PC is 192.168.2.22 and the gateway
(basestation) is 192.168.2.1 as expected.

Interestingly I also obtained a similar situation to that
just described when I tried to install a Dlink router
yesterday with a gateway address of 192.168.0.1 . I
thought this address might causing the trouble, so I
returned it and bought the MS kit instead. It looked
promising initially with the 192.168.2.1 address, but no
luck.

I have not installed the new firmware but will try that
next.

So these are the details, the problem of not being able to
start up applications is puzzling.

The fact that "Explorer(not responding)" is always
involved when the PC locks up perhaps is a clue.

The fact that invoking IE cacuses "Internet Explorer(not
responding)" and causes "Explorer(not respond)" could be a
clue, since starting up Netscape does not do this.

Then the fact that I had a similar situation when I tried
to insall the DLINK router makes me think that it has
something to do with the way EnterNet 300 interacts with
192.168.2.1 and 192.168.0.1 and other addressing issues.

Any ideas? I'll have to install the new firmware next.

Has anyone at MS ever set up the Wireless-B kit using SBC
DSL Yahoo service using the quick start directions with
the wizzard?

TIA, jw

Before you go running off for another product or start tearing your hair
out, when was the last time you checked your system with your anti-virus and
a Trojan detecting program (AdAware is a good free one)?

If you're on Windows XP, go into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event
Viewer and click on Application in the left pane. This will reveal a list
of events on the system which may include yellow triangles with exclamation
points or red circles with white X's in them. Both are indicators of errors
on your system. You can right-click those, select Properties and see a
portion of the error message which may lead to a solution.

And, BTW, I'd ditch the wizard. Do the setup manually.

When you go to program the router make sure that you have stopped
Enternet 300 as this will block you from configuring the router.

After the router has been configured please uninstall the Enternet 300
software as it will only case problems after installing a router. This
is because the route will be doing the PPPoE connection instead of the
Enternet 300 software.

Thanks for all the ideas, I'm going to use this as a
learning opportunity.
