I think you're dreaming a bit :-) If you want to use wifi a.k.a. 802.11b,
then you need to get one of those Linksys media receiver thingys. I've
seen some generic ones out there too but they are all expensive. Check out
some at http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/ . You could also get a
junk PC, install a wifi card, and do some configuring to get that to do
what you want. However, considering you need to buy a $50 wifi card either
way, you're probably better off with the set-top Linksys media thing.

If the distance you're trying to cover is in line-of-sight, then you could
probably use an infrared transmitter and receiver. I've seen those in a
bunch of stereo stores.

Does anyone know a way to stream the audio output of a computer
wirelessly. I don't want to use any special media software on my
computer, except maybe an alternatative virtual sound card driver that
would redirect the output to the wireless receiver.

I know all about the media receivers, I don't want to use one of
those. Imagine just a laptop with this "virutal driver" installed and
a little receiver hooked up to my stereo and all the output coming
from my laptop is being played on my stereo.

Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah, they sell those everywhere too. Most are REALLY short range (meant
for car dashboards) though. Does the FCC/CRTC allow longer range ones?

If you're asking what I think, I've got a set of wireless headphones
sitting on my desk. Input to the xmitter is from the audio out jack
on the computer sound card.

I could probably re-wicker the headset to take the received audio and
pump it to a line-in jack on the stereo without too much trouble.

No special software or drivers required, just Winamp or WMP9 or ...

Or an FM transmitter on the laptop, broadcasting to an FM channel on the
stereo.

How the heck are you going to connect it wirelessly without an peripherals?
That's like asking if you can connect your laptop to the internet without
any peripherals. You need at least a wifi card or something and like I
said, if you want to go wifi, you probably are probably looking at one of
those Linksys media things.

See what I'm actually trying to do is have the output of my laptop
play through a stereo wirelessly. I don't want to hook any external
peripherals up to the laptop, and I want the audio control to be on
the laptop not on the receiver.

Here are a couple of scenarios. If I am using winamp, itunes, a game
or any audio application along those lines, instead of the internal
speakers of the laptop playing the sound, it comes out through my
receiver wirelessly.

The way I feel this could be done is if there was some virtual audio
driver installed on the laptop that would relay the audio output to
the "receiver" which could be a computer that would plug directly into
the audio receiver.

It's been done for at least a decade under Unix, using the 'radio'
program.

You have, by the way, in this thread consistantly omitted saying which
operating system you are running. 'winamp' would tend to imply Windows.
'itunes' was developed on Mac OSX, but was also made available on Windows.
"a game" or "any audio appliction" could be pretty much any OS. There
are noticable differences between OS abilities to copy or redirect
audio.

I don't know if this is what you mean, but I aim to set up a wireless client
that physically connects to my stereo (line out from the sound card to AUX
in on the receiver), and will share my iTunes library (and streaming radio).
I plan to use this setup to play my library (on the main computer) through
my stereo, controlled by the wireless client. So far, my preliminary tests
have worked flawlessly.
