wireless in an apartment?

I have a client that is getting wireless throughout the apartment
building. They say all he needs is an 802.11[bg] device to connect
(and pay of course). My first thought was a linksys WRT54G so that
his multiple computers can all route through the wireless to the
net, but then I wondered if it would actually work since the only
way I had set a linksys up was to route through the wan interface,
which the wireless wouldn't be on the wan side.

Any ideas how to set this up?

Mike

Should be all he needs is b NIC. Assuming he's running Linux, g won't do him
any good, it's not supported yet.

First off, I have a WRT54G and have used it in a couple of ways.

I've hooked up the WAN port to my DMZ and let the WRT54G do NAT for a
nonroutable subnet. Works fine.

I've also chained it to the uplink port of a switch that is on a NAT subnet
off of a Linux box. I didn't use the WAN port or any of the NAT features.
Since the WRT54G contains a 4 port switch, that leaves you with three
ports for 10/100 as well as a 32 user (I think thats the number) Access
Point. I've even used the static routing features in the WRT54G to point
back to the Linux box for subnets that are connected via VPN (Frees/Wan).
Works fine.

Keep in mind that you won't get any 802.11g support on Linux yet. There
is limited 802.11b support for Linux. If all of the client machines in
your wireless LAN are Mac or Windows based, you will be fine. Also, avoid
mixing 802.11b and 802.11g -- the 802.11g performance will suffer
tremendously.

Hope that helps,
-Trent
