Hi,

I've decided to network my small collection of computers, 2 Pc's - 1 Laptop,
and need a recommendation for a Wireless ADSL Modem & Router.

Both Pc's are less than a year old and the Laptop (Sony Vaio) was bought
last week.

I looked into getting a cabled modem, but because of some restrictions with
the property, I'm not allowed to change or modify anything inside the house,
so wireless is what I'm left with.

I'm on a loose budget of about £150, but I don't need anything for the
laptop as it is already wired up for wireless networking.

TIA
Nik

I suggest the Belkin F5D7630uk4A, though there is also the Netgear DG834G
and the USR 9106 which you can consider.

All of the above should be <£100 for the router.

If you want to spend more have a look at the Draytek range.

If buying wireless cards, try and go for everything from the same brand as
the router- it might make life slightly easier.

Regards
Sunil

The Belkin is dead easy to set up, quick and easy. Also allows you to go
g-nitro (108Mbps) if you use Belkin PC cards. Good security features on all
3, WPA on the Belkin.
Just some thoughts,
David.

Just bought both the Belkin router and PCI card that were mentioned above,
and despite never doing anything similar had them up and running out of the
box(es) in 10 minutes.

Looked around for best prices and ended up buying from Amazon - free
delivery for orders over £25 which put them on par with the cheapest I could
find elsewhere. And there customer service is far superior from anyone I
have seen or used online. You may want to have a look at www.pricerunner.com
to see if there is a bargain elsewhere.

Just my 2p worth.

J.

Just had a look on Amazon and found this :

"Order the Netgear DG834G ADSL Modem/Router/54 Mbps access point before July
25, 2004 and receive either the Netgear WG511T 108 Mbps Wireless PC card or
Netgear WG121 802.11g 54 Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 adapter for free."

Looks like a sweet deal, but is the USB adaptor any good or should I go for
an internal PCI card?

Depends. If you have a spare PCI slot, then I would go for it as networking
through USB requires the CPU to carry out extra work.
