Wireless access on Telewest

I want to buy a wireless device so that I can connect my laptop to my
Telewest cable modem without any wires. However, I'm a little confused
over what product to buy.

Initially I was going to buy a Linksys WAP11. This is described as an
access point.

Then I noticed a Linksys BEFW11S4 at a decent price. This seems to
have more features, so why would it be cheaper?

Do I need an access point, router, gateway or bridge? The terminilogy
has got me lost.

What is the best thing for me to get so I can connect a couple of
computers to my broadband?

You will need a router really. The access point wont do the job properly and
will have no firewall etc.

I suggest you look at belkin or dlink as they are very easy to install.

With telewest / ntl if you want to add wireless to your internet connection
you will need to purchase a Cable Router. The Linksys BEFW11S4 would be the
perfect solution.

Briefly

Telewest / NTL Cable Broadband works by authenticating with your MAC address
of your computer. This is a unique identifier of your computers network
card. The Linksys DSL router simulates your computers MAC Address which
allows you connect wire free to the net.

Although it might seem very simple to connect a standard transmitter ot the
network connection that your cable provider gives you it will not be able to
authenticate your machine thus you will not be cable to connect to the
internet.

If I used this solution would I be able to connect my Ipaq 1940 which has a
Sandisk WLan SD card to my Telewest Broadband?

Yes so long as the MAC address that is programmed into the Router is the
registered one from your laptop/pc you will be able to connect any 802.11
b/g compatible device to the internet.

Telewest do a Netgear wireless bundle thats cheap (under £50) - fine if you
only want to connect 1 PC wirelessly

I've just seen this on my selfcare page.
Don't know if it applies to all nic card though.

Good news! We've upgraded your service and as a result you no longer need to
register your PC NIC Mac address. Just plug your equipment into your modem
and reboot everything!

It looks like the mac address is automatically generated now for any nic
card.
