Wireless Access Point Without Router

Greetings,

Well, I did a Google search and, if I found the information that I want,
I didn't understand it. So I'll just come right out and ask.

I have three computers with 802.11g wireless cards already installed. I
also just happen to have a wireless access point, Belkin F5D7130. I do
NOT have a router.

I have no need for the computers to talk to each other, but I would like
for all of them to have Internet access. Can I connect the WAP directly
to the Ethernet port on the cable or DSL modem? If I do, and it works,
are there any pitfalls that I should know about?

Thanks,
Greg

Unless your DSL provider provisions three IP addresses to your modem, your
three machines will not be able to get to the internet.

A router solves that problem...

This only works if u buy one IP for ea. machine from the ISP, AND u
would be directly tied to the Internet with no protection.

When routers are dirt-cheap, I imagine this is the cheaper way than
whatever fancy footwork you are trying to get to.

Thanks to all who responded. Though wireless routers are inexpensive, I
wanted to avoid purchasing one unnecessarily. Can't get around it,
though.

Thanks again,
Greg

As a brain-teaser only, u maybe able to daisy-chain the machines using
ICS, but all machines must on ON all the time, and again, no
protection. Frankly I go get a second job first before I had to go
through that hassle.

Indeed a Brain teaser ...
U could connect one PC (A) to the Internet via the Access point in the
infrastructure mode. Also has ICS setup.
Other PCs connect to PC (A) in Adhoc mode... I guess this would work.

In case the PC (A) is not on, other PCs may directly connect to the
internet using the Access Point!

Hey Greg, As I’m sure you know by now you really shouldn’t listen to
most people because more often than not they don’t know what they are
talking about. If you don’t want to buy a router you don’t need to as
long as you have an extra ethernet PCI card. All you need to do is
install this extra card to the same computer that your dsl modem is
connected to then use a crossover cable to connect your access point
to this card. You can then connect wirelessly as many computers as
your access point will allow. If you’re using windows play around
with windows networking until you figure it out. I know it works
because i’ve been using this setup for over 3 years. I know that
there are companies that don’t want the public to know that this is
possible but oh well. Good Luck.

In light of wireless routers currently available at dirt cheap prices, why
would one want to be stuck with a "wireless solution" that requires a wired
computer to be powered up and running a proxy agent all the time.

I'd spend the small money on a router, place the WAP at the other end of the
building and wire it to the router. Makes *much* more sense...
