Wired problem

Hi
I'm trying to wire another PC to my two PC wireless setup.

My laptop has a wireless card which is connecting to a router/asdl/access
point the same goes for my second PC upstairs. The laptop also has a 10/100
ethernet network card.

Is it possible to wire a third PC (with 10/100 ethernet card) to my laptop's
ethernet card so I can share files and the internet or even just the
internet?

If so how must I go about it?

I know I can buy a USB wireless network device (for the third PC) but I
would like to try and save some money if possible.

I have wired the laptop network card to the third PC using a Cat5 cable but
both icons on each PC is saying 'network cable unplugged'.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

TIA

George

Yes, both. The first step, as mike pointed out, is that you must use a
crossover cable to connect the laptop and third PC.

After that, the easiest thing to do, assuming you are running Windows XP on
the laptop, is to bridge the two (wired and wireless) connections. To do
this, open the Network Connecions window, select both connections,
right-click to bring up the context menu and choose "Bridge connections".

If everything is working, the third PC and the newly-created bridge
interface on the laptop should both be able to pick up IP configuration from
the router's DHCP server. Each machine should be able to access the others,
and the Internet.

There are other ways of doing it, if necessary.

Hi
I created the bridge connection. I now have a limited connectivity on the
third PC and the laptop LAN card. I'ved no wireless internet (until I remove
the wireless connection from the bridge).
I can view and access files and print one way, from the third PC to the
Laptop.
Is therre a way to enable the bridge to access the internet?

TIA

Not as such - if the bridge is working correctly, everything should work.

Can you post the output from "ipconfig /all" on the laptop and third PC?

Instructions if needed: open a command prompt (Start -> Run... "cmd"), then
type "ipconfig /all" (minus the quotes) and press return. Use the mouse to
select the output (scroll the window first if needed) and right-click to
copy the selected text to the clipboard.

Looks suspiciously like there is still a bridge on the laptop.

Regardless, the presence of "Autoconfiguration" in both this and your
previous post mean DHCP is failing. I can't tell why that is, but it does
explain the fact that things aren't working.

Hi Alex

Would manually configuring the wireless and the wired sort out the problem?
Also my wireless setup has WEP enabled. Would the third PC (wired) need to
provide a WEP password?

TIA
