Wired LAN works, Wireless on same machines does not. (longish post)

I am close to launching the bloody things through the window!

Here is the spec.

Origo ADSL router ASR 8400 (4 port wired)
Desktop PC Windows XP pro SP1 Norton Internet security 2004
Laptop PC Windows XP pro SP1 Norton personal firewall 2003

Both connected to the router *wired* with router assigned IP addresses and
using the ORIGO Ethernet setup program

IP Desktop 10.0.0.7 Laptop 10.0.0.4 Subnet mask 255.0.0.0 gateway 10.0.0.2
(these work fine if I input them and set the Router to not assign the IP
addresses as well.)

All works fine, file sharing, printer sharing and both connect to the net
using the router.

I have disabled simple network sharing, enabled guest with a password but
the computers will not allow me to access the workgroup. This is a pain, but
not the point of the post.

Wireless configuration:

Same computers, cat5 cable removed from laptop.

Desktop has a ZyDas ZD1201 wireless USB adapter and is connected to the
ORIGO router using Cat5
Laptop has a Level One 11Mbps 32bit Wireless PCMCIA adapter

I followed the tutorial on
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e.../02april08.asp
and the wireless cards see the SSID and seem to connect. When hovering over
the connection icon in the start bar I get a message Wireless Network
Connection (Peer to Peer) Speed:11Mbps Signal Strength: Excellent.

I ran the internet sharing wizard and rebooted.

Desktop connected to Router Via cable Works fine on the Internet, No file
sharing, no printer sharing
Laptop - Nothing. No file sharing, no printer sharing, Can not Ping the
other computer, no Internet.

Bugger.

I have spent all day on this and I am very fed up.

Could some kind soul out there please tell me the error of my ways and how
to fix it?

I have networked many peer to peer computers using Win 95/98 and cat5/hubs
etc (suites of 20+computers). I am quite new to Windows XP.

Cheers

Have a check and see if Win XP has added a network bridge by default in the
network conections screen -
I had what sounds like an identical issue with XP, in my case deleting the
bridge cured it.
It was XP trying to be clever and messing it up when I fitted two network
device to the same PC (Wireless and ethernet).
May not be the case for you but it worked for me (like so many things in
life!!)

Could it be a firewall problem?

When I switched to a router with built in firewall I found that I had to
uninstall Zone Alarm. Just stopping it running didn't work (presumably it
was also running a process)

simple, the ICS wizard will have set the desktop sharing interface to
be 192.168.0.1 thereby making it invisible to a laptop assigned
10.x.y.z addresses

change that manually and you're away.

you will also have to tell the laptop to use the desktop as its
default gateway I think

Thanks for the reply, I have tried with and without bridges without
success. :-(

It is not a problem for the wired connection, could it be a problem for only
the wireless connection? I will try this before smashing the PC into bits
:-)

Thanks

Yes, I thought that too. It didn't work :-(

So is this the IP of the wireless adapter or the ethernet adapter connecting
the PC to the router?

Thanks for the reply

the laptop needs to have the IP address of the desktop running ICS as
its default gateway. This will be the IP address of the wireless
adaptor on the desktop as the laptop can't see the ethernet card or
the router unless the PC routes it from the wireless.

What IP addresses do the desktop and laptop have now on their various
adaptors ? Can you ping around the network.

No. the desktop attached to the router can ping the router but not the
laptop, the laptop pings nothing.

Just tried again. I can see the laptop in the view workgroup (from the
desktop) but on double clicking it says I do not have permissions and the
path was not found.

this is the ping:

Pinging 10.0.0.5 with 32 bytes of data:

Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.

Ping statistics for 10.0.0.5:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

The request times out from the laptop to the desktop and the desktop is not
visible in view workgroup computers.
