Is it possible to connect a wired IP camera to an access point which will
then connect wirelessly to the existing network, which is connected to the
internet via a wireless router/cable modem, ie:

Wired IP Cam------Access Point> [thin air] <Wireless Router----Cable
Modem-----Internet

Probably if you change "Access Point" to "Wireless Bridge".

Sorta. It won't work with an "access point". However, many access
points can be configured as a "client adapter", where it acts like an
ethernet bridge. The big problem is that the client adapter will
bridge exactly one MAC address. That means you can connect your IP
Camera, but nothing else to the client adapter.

Another possibility is a "3Scum Workgroup Bridge" which does the same
thing but for more than one connection. This is limited to 8 or 16
computahs and IP devices. See:
3CRWE83096A and 3CRWE675075

Yet another way is to use WDS (Wireless Distribution Something). This
allows devices to simultaneously act as an infrastructure wireless
access point, and a transparent wireless bridge. You would need two
compatible (which means having the same chipset) routers to do the
trick. A pair of WRT54G routers work tolerable. You can connect via
wireless or wired to either WRT54G.
