I got NetgearMA401, 802.11b; Router Netgear MR314 and Comcast.net in
Maryland.

So far I get no connection when I remove the Output cable from the cable
modem MotorolaSB4100 and plug it into the Router and then from the output #1
to the Computer. I cannot understand why. All lights are green on cable
modem and Router.

When I unplug again and re-insert them just into the cable modem, I got
connections back.

What could possibly cause this?

Until I have solved this I cannot go further with the wireless connection to
the laptop.

Thanks in advance

Karl

I have the same router, and it is awesome...

Connect the router to the computer and configure it first. If you installed
it with its original settings, the WAN port is still disabled. Even if you
choose the default settings, run through the Wizard at least once. (At the
very least, change the Administrator name and password. Once you are done,
connect the WAN port to the cable modem. If it doesn't get a connection
within 15 seconds or so, power cycle the router (at least 1 minute).

Once it comes up, you might want to make security changes to the wireless
connection. Right now, anyone that puts "any" as a SSID on their unit will
be able to connect to the router. To slow some folks down, I recommend you
change the SSID and enable WEP. Although WEP will slow the connection some,
it will still be much faster than the cable modem, and therefore, no effect.

Good morning, Courtney:

This morning I turned the desktop on (having made no changes of any kind
from yesterday, when nothing worked) and this AM I got the router and
computer on the desktop to work together. I can see e-mail and the internet.
Strange, right? No hardware or software changes and it works.

But now to the recommendations.

WHERE do I make those changes, how to access them?

I bought Netgear equipment new some time ago, but I never got a booklet with
it. So I am kind of lost.

I hope you or someone else here can assist.

Thanks in advance
