Hi all,

I'm facing this problem lately. We have a Win2003 domain server with
WinXP client machines. When a client PC is left unused but not logged
off for a while (a day or more) then when the user comes back and
tries to reach some of the network resources (e. g. a shared folder on
the server) he/she cannot do so. A dialog box demanding user name and
password pops up and if you put some other user's name and password -
it grants you access. If you put the original user's name and password
- it refuses access.

Is there some kind of timeout that should be set to longer period or
the key is somewhere else? At server's or at client's side? I have no
clue for now...

Thank you in advance for your attention.

Does the behavior persist if the user logs off and then back on? --- Steve

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your follow-up.

No, everything is fine when the user logs off and then logs on again.

I would suggest that you have the user log of and log on again. Kerberos
tickets by default expire after 10 hours and that would probably be the best
solution to deal with the problem. The expiration times can be modified in
Domain Security Policy/account policies/kerberos policy, but I would not
recommend it. There are screensavers such as winexit.scr and third party
ones that can log a user off after certain period of idle time. Winexit.scr
is in the Resource Kit, but it may require a registry mod if the user is not
local administrator and it will force all applications to close. The link
below explains the kerberos policies.--- Steve
