winsock initialization failed

Just clean-installed Win98SE. Tried running game called Heretic II.
Game doesn't launch, instead a pop-up box appears which says "winsock
initialization failed"

After installing Win98SE, I went to Device Manager and removed
something (can't remember exactly what it was) called "network
adaptor". Could this be the problem?

I ran sfc, but that didn't help me out.

Any suggestions gratefully received. Best regards, Robert.

Correction: I didn't remove "network adaptor" - rather, I think it
was called "dial-up adaptor". I got rid of it because a) I don't
think I have any dial-up adaptor and b) I don't want to connect to any
network or the internet.

Most older networkable games required some form of adapter which could be
used, even if not used. The dialup adapter [modem] was sufficient for
initialization and IPX/SPX, which is what Heretic II used if I remember
correctly.

You might try modifying its INI or other game file to remove the network
aspect.

Problem solved! I used sfc to restore a file named Msvcrt.dll. Once
that had been done, Heretic II ran fine. (Please note, I examined its
config file and could not spot anything related to winsock, etc.)

Now this game loads OK, I used it to test out my voodoo1 card and it
works! Glorious BluroVision! ;-)

Oh wow, msvcrt gone, ah yeah that would cause problems.

Now be fair and the graphics, that is a pretty old game, which I played the
heck out of... still have it on floppy disk somewhere ['course the disk is
probably shot by now..]
Well, I was definitely dealing with an old memory regarding the config...
maybe it was a command line option, anyway, glad you got it sorted out.

You ran SFC and reinstalled the original file, I presume. What version
Windows is it, FE or SE?
