I would like to confirm whether we need to have WINS available in an W2003 AD
environment assuming the following conditions:

No 3rd party applications require WINS
No SMS
All servers/clients can register in DNS (W2K or newer)
We use Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2003 with ADC for dir sync. In this case I
understand WINS is still needed for the following:

Recipient update service requires it
• I've also seen that the auto redirect when a mailbox changes servers also
relies on WINS. (I will ask Gio if his tests identified if this is required
on the client or not)
• Also the ADC requires WINS. You can add all of the required fields using
fully qualified, but when ADC pulls up the folder information (AD) it
requires WINS resolution.
.. Changing a password for an E2003 mailbox from OWA needs WINS?

Is that true for Exchange? and are there an other reasons?

Thanks in advance,

Ed

Outlook running as an Exchange Client is still netbios based.

If it all runs on one subnet you never did need WINS to start with,...WINS
is for getting Netbios Naming to work over a router.

Phillip,

Another question to you - according to this technet article -
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;837391

It states Outlook 2003 does NOT require WINS. Are you looking at something
that contradicts this?

Quoted from:
Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange 2000 Server require NetBIOS name
resolution for full functionality:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...837391&sd=RMVP

In larger Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 organizations and larger Microsoft
Exchange 2000 Server organizations, some operations do not work correctly if
NetBIOS name resolution is not working on the network.

CAUSE
Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2000 still have several NetBIOS dependencies. You
may have to use NetBIOS name resolution across different subnets for the
successful operation of all Exchange components, depending on the network
topology.

RESOLUTION
Microsoft recommends that Exchange organizations use Windows Internet Name
Service (WINS) and DNS for name resolution. Installations of Exchange 2003
and Exchange 2000 in large and subnetted organizations without WINS have not
been fully tested. In large organizations, NetBIOS name resolution through
broadcasts may not function correctly. Some Exchange functionality may also
be affected.
