IS WINS still needed in AD

We have a small AD single forest domain with 2 DCs each is a DNS server
also. We do have a VPN for remote access for about 5 users. Is WINS
needed for the VPN or will DNS work. Any other reason to keep WINS?

Regards

Carlos

WINS is needed if you want to browse over a routed connection (and if you
want to browse at all, you need NetBT enabled - WINS makes that far less
chatty so it's a good idea to use it). Also, Exchange likes to have WINS. I
don't really see a downside to using it. If you don't want it it's a good
idea to disable NetBT on all machines.

Can this be done in GP?

If you are referring to the disabling the Computer Browser service, then
yes, you can accomplish this via Grup Policies (Computer
Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\System Services)

It's the wrong question.
AD never needed WINS
Windows ever since Win2000 never needed WINS

Applications need WINS if they were written to depend on it. If the company
that wrote the Application has not changed it,... then it still needs WINS.
I'm talking about "other companies",...anybody.

Symantec Antivirus Corp Edition is Netbios dependent and needs WINS if there
is more than one subnet.

Earlier versions of Exchange and Outlook need WINS

Network Browsing (Network Places,..Network Neighborhood) still needs WINS if
the LAN has more than one subnet.

Yep, that's what I do. In a huuuuge network I might not. Dunno; I don't tend
to manage those. ;-)

The latest version (Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0) does not.

That's good. I even have the License for that but it is only because we had
to "re-buy" our Licenses due to a change in Corp ownership and so we ended
up with the latest verion. But I never went back and upgraded our setup from
the version 10.2 that is running on it because,...it is working and I don't
want to go through the greif.

It looks like we may be whiching to Trend. The comparible Trend product
that does all the same things can be bought for $2000 less than what
Symantec was just for the License renewal.

I think I really need a grammar checker though for my posts :-) Hopefully
it isn't netbios dependent.

And Trend's support is superb. The same cannot be said of any yellow-box
software.
