WINS Setup between 2 remote locations

I need to setup name resolution between 2 of our offices. Each office is
connected by a 2Mb leased line but the networks at each end are small enough
that we have not really needed name resolution. The reason for installing
WINS now is that the line will be replaced by a VPN.

I was going to install 2 servers at each end 1 as a primary and 1 as a
secondary. The replication will be set as push/pull. The primary server at
each site will also replicate with each other. Does this sound like a good
way forward or is there a better way.

Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

If you have two or more WINS servers in your network and would like to replicate WINS database, it is recommended each WINS server points to itself as Primary and another WINS server as Secondary WINS in the TCP/IP configuration.

Hi Bob,

I hope things are going well!

I like to point out that according to Microsoft, a WINS server must ONLY
point to itself in it's IP properties due to ownership or records (for that
specific server), registration problems and other reasons. If another entry
is in there, and the WINS services on teh machine is down, then it will try
to register into the other one, and the ownership of it's own database may
be misconstrued to belong to the other. TO avoid these sorts of problems,
only point to itself as Primary only, and leave the others blank. I remember
one Microsoft engineer years ago told me (forgot who he is) that one best
practice not really publicized is to point to itself twice.

Here's the link. I double checked the review date on it, and it was reviewed
at the beginning of this month, so I guess they're sticking with their
assessment and statement.

Setting Primary and Secondary WINS Server Options (150737) [Both WINS
entries should point to itself]:

I hope that helps.

Instead of the website you're using, I suggest to use OEx (Outlook Express
or any other newsreader), and configure a news account, pointing to
news.microsoft.com. This is a direct link to the Microsoft Public
Newsgroups. It is FREE and requires NO ISP's Usenet account. OEx allows you
to easily find, track threads, cross-post, sort by date, poster's name,

Thanks for the comments so far, I shall make sure that all servers point to
itself. Does the architecture of the whole setup sound ok?

Sorry, Bob, I haven't been in the private MVP discussions in awhile. I hope
