Hello,

for the beginning I'm sorry for my English.

I have following problem.

Network description :

- Old NT4 Domain
- 1 PDC and several BDCs
- 1 WINS server on NT4 PDC and several WINS servers on Win2000 File&Print
servers in different locations

Problem description:
Last week SERVER services and WINS servers on 3 F&P Servers in 3 different
location fell down (unexpectally). Users have problems to logon to servers,
has problem with printing of course. We've found that WINS service was
running, but was somehow hanged - It didn't answer requests.

There was no reasonable message in EVENT LOG for this failure. Wins service
couldn't be restarted.

The only solution was to reboot these WINS servers.

Anybody has an idea, what could cause these problems. Please help, it's
urgent. Many users are not satisfied. :-(

When you say it couldn't be restarted did you receive an
error when you attempted to restart the WINS Service?
If so can you post? You also mentioned "no reasonable"
events. Can you post the unreasonable ids along with their
descriptions?

On this morning two WINS servers were down again... Only these events occured
: Nothing else. Wins Service running, but not responding. When you click on
WINS manager in W2K in Administrative tools, it says there is no WINS server
:-(. Reboot helped.

Last saved events about wins :

EVENT ID : 4204 WINS could not read from the User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
socket.

HERE IS THOSE UNREASONABLE EVENTS :

I've tried to restart WINS service --->

EVENT ID : 4098 WINS was terminated by the service controller. WINS will
gracefully terminate.

And after that really good one : :-)

Event ID : 4097 WINS initialized properly and is now fully operational.

But if you go to Administrative tools and click on WINS, it said that there
is no WINS server !!!... And actually there was no WINS server running. Even
you can see that WINS service was running. I really don't understand that.
Users have many problems. After reboot everything was ok.

Thanks for answers. Everything could help.

reinstalling..

I would like to send you an picture, how it looks like. Reality is different,
many users have problems with loging on, to reach servers, to access to their
homedrives etc. It's very bad situation.

http://www.volny.cz/patrikcze/error/WINS%20PROBLEM.bmp

If you look at picture, you can see that service is started but is not
responding (see in MMC WINS).

Now is situation very impressive, I've restarted WINS service several times
with no result. After few minutes Wins services were running again.

Notice : This problem occurs on many servers in many different location
almost all of them are W2K Servers. Domain is running on NT4 PDC.
