I have a network with 2 sites connected by a T1, right now I'm useing AD
with DNS I dont' have a wins server... If I browse the network I see all
computers from both site... one day it just started working like that...
these sites have different subnets and I thought that without WINS or
somethign like that you would only see the computers in your subnet unless
you called them by name... 2 questions should I install a WINS server,
everything seams to be runnign ok. And question 2 is why am I seeing both
subnets?

Thanks

You might be allowing netbios broadcasts through the router? Check all of
the DC's for WINS running. I would setup WINS, it's not difficult - sounds
like you have a small environment.

yeah no wins running as of yet... ok I'll install wins I just wasn't sure as
in some MS docs it seams like they arn't recomending it anymore or
something... but I think it would be good to install as I don't want extra
broadcasts going over the slow link... thanks

If you want to use browsing across routers or WAN links, you really need
WINS. And setting up WINS and making all machines WINS clients should cut
down broadcasts.

If the sites are permanently connected, you can get by with one WINS
server. If you install two, you need to have them replicating so that they
both have info about the "other" site.

The Netbios name service is independent of DNS, whether it is working
through WINS or by broadcast (as it is now).

thanks for all the help one more question.... When I setup WINS on my DHCP
server what do I put under "046 WINS/NBT Node Type" do I need to do that?
I'm going to put the IPs of my WINS server under "044 WINS server" but this
other one there seams to be a B P N and H node.. thanks

I thought WINS clients were automatically set to H node. That is
certainly the one to use. It tries WINS first, and only resorts to broadcast
if WINS doesn't reply.

Yes you should specify the Node type via option 046
hybrid is recommended: 0x8.
