I have a WINS server on my domain controller. The service is running and the
management console lists the server (with correct server name and IP address)
but it reports that the server cannot be located because the network path was
not found. Any sggestions as how to diagnose and correct the problem?

It may be master browser issue. Use browstat to check the master browser status.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I checked the browser status using "browstat status', which showed that it
was running and that I have 2 backup servers, one on an XP machine and the
other on the domain controller, which is where the master browser is
running. (Is it normal for browstat to list the broswer as both the master
and backup?)

Can you recommend anything else to check or do? Thanks,

I would suspect since WINS has the tcp/ip address that this
is not a name resolution issue e.g., it doesn't need name to tcp/ip
address translation. Network path not found could also mean
something is blocking the necessary path to the server. Can you
successfully map a drive on the problem server from the WINS
server?

Do a simple test. Can you net view \\serverIP? If not what's the system error?

I tried new view from both the domain/WINS server and another computer on the
network. Both ran with no problems.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I am unsure what you want me to do. The
domain controller and WINS server are on the same machine. I can map drives
on the domain controller from other domain computers and visa versa.

Okay but did you see both machines listed in
the output?

This error message is common when the WINS server itself is not
configured to point towards itself as the primary and secondary
WINS server.
