There are five requirements for browsing across subnets (viewing the
computers in My Network Places) in a multi-subnet environment.
1) PDCe must be present. This domain controller merges the browse list of
all subnets in a multi-subnet environment (collected from Master Browsers)
and sends the compiled list back to the Master Browsers.
3) WINS must be present. The Master Browser of each subnet uses WINS to
locate the PDCe (designated as the 1B name in WINS). It is helpful that all
computers register with the same primary WINS server.
2) Computer Browser service running on at least one machine in each subnet.
This allows that machine to become a Master Browser. You need at least a
Master Browser in each subnet, or no computers will be seen in Network
Places from that subnet. The Master Browser periodically sends a
representative list of all computers running File and Print Sharing for the
subnet off to the PDCe of the domain. All machines wanting to browse
Network Places get the list from their local Master Browser which in turns
gets the domain-wide list from the PDCe. All machines also register their
name with the Master Browser, who as indicated sends this list to the PDCe.
There can also be up to three Backup Browsers per subnet, and these Backup
Browser must also be running the Computer Browser service. Backup Browsers
take load off the Master Browser.
4) File and Print Sharing service running on any machine which wants to
become visible in the browse list for it's subnet in the first place. Note
that File and Print Sharing service automatically enables NetBIOS over
TCP/IP which is required for a machine to register in WINS (assuming that it
is also pointing at a WINS server). This is most important for the PDCe.
5) NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled to support the transport of NetBIOS
information within the TCP/IP packets exchanged between all machines
involved in the steps 1-4. NetBIOS over TCP/IP is required for a machine
to register in WINS (assuming that it is also pointing at a WINS server).
If it is not enabled, the machine will not register with WINS.
