Will no response from a powered off WINS server be the same as receiving a
NEGATIVE NAME QUERY RESPONSE? (see 2nd paragraph below.)

...."If the name already exists in the database, the WINS server sends a NAME
QUERY REQUEST message to the owner of the particular record to determine
whether the name is still active. If the current owner responds with a
POSITIVE NAME QUERY RESPONSE, the WINS server sends the new client a NEGATIVE
NAME REGISTRATION RESPONSE message. In this case, the WINS server denies name
registration to the new client.
If the current owner responds with a NEGATIVE NAME QUERY RESPONSE, the WINS
server purges the existing record from its database, and assigns the name to
the new client."

We are trying to predict what will happen when we shut off the old WINS
server. A new server has been built and is replicating fine. We were
concerned that records in the WINS database show the server that will be
powered off as the owner.

Thanks in advance.

It will be a NULL response and after the timeout period, the client will
continue trying to resolve using the default 0x8 Hybrid (Local table first,
NBNS second, and broadcast last).

Of course, needless to say, if you have a multi-routed enviornment
(including VPN clients), clients will not be able to resolve NetgBIOS names
outside of their subnet for NetBIOS based applications.
