All;

Is a WINS server really needed in a domain that has all Win2k Servers, Win2k
and WinXP clients ??
There is a DNS server configured in the domain, so what benefit would a WINS
server provide and would users be able to browse the network without it?

Im curious...

Thanks
Tom

If you have more than one subnet and want to be able to browse you will need
Wins. If you don't care about browsing and don't have any applications that
rely on Netbios name resolution you don't need Wins.

Thanks,
Browsing between subnets was my next question.

It is theoretically possible to browse across subnets without WINS, but
WINS is the obvious way to go. See KB 150800 "Domain Browsing with TCP/IP ..
" .

I thought that WINS was needed if you used Outlook with
an exchange server that was on a different subnet ?

I hope not, I have three four subnets that use our Exchange server and
haven't seen a problem.
I'd assume that if DNS is set up correctly, outlook would resolve the
exchange server name through it.

It depends on the version of Outlook. Older ones were "netbios-based". I
don't remember where the version cut-off point was.
