I have a 2003 domain with all xp clients. Exc 2000 and 2003, soon to retire
the 2000 server. I have a handful of 2000 machines so do I really need
WINS? I find WINS a headache and it seems to be but I don't know for sure
if it will take anything away by turning it off.
I have Browser issues and now get Netlogon errors.
The network is subnetted into vlans and there is a cisco router in the
middle of the vlans.

With workstations and servers Windows 2000 and later, you do not need WINS.

look out, you may have aps that will call the Netbios interface to do clietn
server things.

so first check how much wins Queries you have using perfmon, before you disable
it alltogether.

good luck,

Actually the two other responses are both correct. You
technically don't need WINS in a pure W2k or higher environment
unless you have a routed tcp/ip environment and you would like
to browse using My Network Places. Also there are plenty of
apps which rely on NetBIOS and or the browse lists. Two I can
think of being Anti Virus and backup solutions..
