I've a machine called swocmpq01, which has a dns alias of "apps"
I've a share off swocmpq01 called software$

I can ping "apps" (qualifies to swocmpq01), and browse \\swocmpq01 but
can't browse to \\apps.

I know its probably a WINs issue, but I don't have a wins server
running. Any solution???

Hello, look at this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;281308

Maybe it helps you to solve your problem.

Thanks,

But I'm running SP4, so this fix should be there already...
I might try the reg hack on a test machine though..

If you read the article it says,
"To resolve this problem, obtain and install the latest Windows 2000 service
pack, and then edit the registry."

It also says that the issue was "first corrected in SP3". Anyway, I
tried it and it worked for machines near to the Server, but not for
machines distant in the network. I guess thats because it only affects
the lanmanager process, which is not DNS based right? I can ping
apps.my.domain.com from a distance, but can't browse to it.
