WINS Corruption?

We are running native mode 2003 AD which includes a well functioning DNS
setup with no observed issues.

On a regular basis we will be doing random ping checks and about 25% the
IP/computer name mapping is incorrect. WINS record shows 2 machines, one is
active and the other released.

The problem is if you ping machine A or B you get ping replies for both.

Nbtstat confirms the correct machine, but we want to stop this misleading
behavior.

The original WINS system was migrated from NT4 domain and contains a LOT of
garbage that also appears to remain in the database despite many attempts to
tombstone.

Any suggestions for tweaking/resolving our nagging issues?

Any differences if you ping the FQDN and host name?

nope - when using ">ping computer.domain.net", the replies are returned for
both machines with same IP address.

When I've had problems with WINS, I just delete every record it contains. It
will rebuild itself "fresh" all by itself. If you have any static entries,
record what they are so you can recreate them. When ever a client contacts the
WINS Server the Server will re-enter that Client into the database again
automatically.
