Hello everyone,

If I am running say a Windows 2003 Server or Server 2000, and have XP, 2000
and windows 98 clients, do I need WINS setting up or will DNS suffice?

Many thanks to all.
Jeff

There is no simple answer to that question. It depends on your network
config and what you want to do. If the machines are all in the same IP
subnet and on the same segment you prbably don't need WINS, because all
Netbios operations can use broadcasts. Installing WINS and making all
machines WINS clients might improve network performance by reducing
broadcast traffic.

If you have a routed network you may find a lot of things (which rely on
Netbios names or the browser service) won't work without WINS.

it is better to use WINS in this case.
