hi,

my customer has wins in his win2003 domain and wins in his winnt4 domain.
wins in nt4 domain will be gone in 3 months after migration to AD. At
present time they have two win2003 wins servers and one winnt4 wins server.
push/pull replication only exists between both wins servers.

Problem: as you know to administer nt4 domains we must use nt user manager.
well since nt4 domain records don't get registered in win2003 wins servers
when I try to switch domains in the nt user manager to administer the nt4
domain user database I receive a "could not find domain controller for this
domain" error message. presently computer are configured with only two
wins servers and they are the win2003 wins server. there is a trust
between nt4
and ad.

NOW if I configure a 3rd wins server on my computer (tcp/ip settings) which
points to the nt4 wins server I don't receive the error and I am able to
adminiser nt4 domain using nt user manager as normal. but once I remove the
nt4 wins server I am unable to administer the nt4 domain. and as you know,
the reason it works is because my computer uses the third wins server since
the needed records don't exist in the two other 2003 wins servers.

Since the nt4 wins records are not automatically registered in my win2003
wins (nt4 DC doesn't have 2003 wins servers in tcp/ip settings) I created
static entries in the wins 2003 server for the nt4 computer and for the nt4
domain. They are as follows. nt4dc is name of nt4 domain controller.
nt4dom is name of nt4 domain.

Record name: nt4dc
type: [00h] Workstation
IP: 10.0.0.55

Record name: nt4dc
type: [03h] Messenger
IP: 10.0.0.55

Record name: nt4dc
type: [20h] File Server
IP: 10.0.0.55

Record name: nt4dom
type: [1Ch] Domain Controller
IP: 10.0.0.55

Since I need to get rid of nt4 wins server now I need to make this work with
just my win2003 wins servers. Even with these entries in win2003 wins
servers I still cannot connect to user manager (computers cannot location
nt4 domain). The only way users/computers can connect to winnt4 domain is if
I add the nt4 wins server to my computers wins server list in
nic\tcp/ip settings.

Why doesn't my static entries solve issue? Isn't that the purpose of those
entries? How do I remedy this issue? Thanks.
