Ugh! Upgraded to WinMe the other day (from Win98 first
edition) to have the cable company install wireless
network.
Host computer with the modem/router is only a year old so
has more than sufficient resources etc on WinXP. Wireless
Connection (via D-Link 2.4ghz wireless) works. So its not
defective equipment or host. The problem appears to be
either WinMe and/or the dinosaur the wireless connection
is running on: Compaq Deskpro, WinMe, 200Mhz, 128MB RAM,
Pentium. (For my limited use, this is enough though-until
now.)
Problem-when the tech restarted the networked dinosaur
computer just to make sure everything installed, Me kept
wanting to start in Safe Mode.
Tech could not find a way to make it stable. Half the
times it wanted to restart in Safe Mode-the other times it
worked in normal. His solution (until I can replace the
computer next year): just leaving cable connection open
and the computer on. Somehow this disturbs me no matter
what kind of firewall he tells me I have. I cant even
download some of the security updates for WinMe because
they would restart my computer and I would possibly lose
the network.
Is the problem WinMe-or that this dinosaur technically
doesnt meet recommended speed requirements for the
wireless (300mhz) and that destabilizes WinMe? The tech
guy said the wireless is running perfectly fine and didnt
even mention the processor speed issue (I read off the box
what the system requirements were so that is my guess).
Would this destabilize Me on startup only-because once it
is running, it works just fine the tech said?
Is this anything I can fix? Or it is hopeless and the
computer needs to be sent to a graveyard? (OK-I know the
answer to the latter already and intend to replace it next
year anyhow....)
Thanks from one very LowTech person!
