Last year I installed service pack 1 for WindowsXP and my modem would not
connect. BT Support said that SP1 was the problem and that their Frogs do
not work with it. They told me to format my HD and install XP again and not
to use SP1 ever again. Others on this NG said that support were wrong. I
loaded SP1 again and again I could not connect or manually set up my
connection. After several calls to BT I found a marvellous lady who knew
what to do. After several months with SP1 loaded I had another computer
problem at the weekend and chose the "Repair" option from the XP disk.
Everything worked well apart from my BT connection, This time support told
me it was not connecting because repair had deleted my SP1settings!!! Only
having XP on that computer and not being able to connect to the MS site I
cannot download SP1again. What a lot of crap support tell us, he said that
by changing certain registry settings that I could undo the changes made by
the repair installation but that they are not allowed to tell clients how to
change them.
Now what do I do? the option after choosing to set up my connection is
greyed out.
Derek.

Hi,
as this sort of thing is typical of the sort of problems that occur with
the various USB modems, why not cut your losses and purchase a router
instead (but not a netgear)? Once the router is configured and running
(usually less than 15 mins work) all of your upgrade mightmares will be a
thing of the past.

You may also wish to avoid D-Link.

Utter Bollocks!
I have run a Frog on USB via powered hub on Zen for almost a year with XP
and service pack 1 without a glitch. I now run an X Modem Ethernet with
ADSL nation and Buffalo 54g wireless router with same software config and no
issues either.

I think you'll find that the initial release of SP1 used the US settings
for BB & were a complete bugger to remove. Eventually the issue was
remedied. At one point BT were also supplied a batch of driver CDs with
french settings, this produced a similar problem.

And again I'll refer the honourable gentleman to the reply I gave some posts
ago ;-)

Phone BT, correct them on their "facts". Their frogs do not comply with
the USB power consumption specs, and draw too much power on the USB bus.
Explain that it's in no way XP SP1 fault that it's shutting down the
modem, and demand a replacement modem that DOES comply with the USB
power requirements (500ma).

You might also ask the question if they want to leave themselfs liable
for any hack attempts that may be made on your system, due to you not
being able to install XPSP1 and it's security fixes because of their
hardware....

Fortunately the modem works on my other computer using Windows 98SE
otherwise I would not be posting until I get this sorted out.
