Windows XP keeps disabling my onboard card!

Hello
I have a PC with an inbuilt network card. on seemingly random occasions
Windows XP decides to disable the card. I have also known this to happen on
PC's at work on occasions. My query is what are the circumstances whereby XP
will disable the lan port ??
