Windows XP & Broadband Speed

Hi

Just a few things that have always baffled me about my Broadband connection.

I am on Pipex 1mb service and use a Speedstream 3060 modem.

When connect to the net, how come I get a little 'bubble' message pop up
from my Task Bar saying I have just connected at 2.8Mbps when I have a 1mb
connection?

When I bring up Windows Task Manager and go to the Networking tab it gives
me similar information. How come it claims my Link Speed is 2Mbps, when it
should be 1? This then messes up the Network Utilization column as it maxes
out at about 35% usage when I'm hitting my top download speeds (about
125-130kb/s).

Any feedback to help me understand this would be appreciated!

I know the wheels go round and round, but whats the story prior to that
movement?

Sounds like Pipex are providing you with a 2Mbps connection but rate
capping you to 1Mbps at their end. This would allow them to regrade
you to 2Mbps in the future without paying a regrade fee.

i think its something to do with 2.8MB is your conection speed between your
PC and your modem, but the conection speed of the line is still 1MB thats
why your task manager says 2mb cause thats as fast as it can possibly go
with yout current set up

my NIC tells me that im connected to cable at 100mb as does task manager,
but it never goes about a couple of % as thats all the line can handle but
the PC hardware can go a lot faster

If your on data stream then I think they connect at 2 meg and throttle
back therefore it will always say 2 meg but you get max 1 meg. Good
news is if you want to upgrade and your connection and VP will allow
they just turn the knob up!

Have a look at the diagnostics for the modem - It would be intresting to
see what speed it says you are connected (if it does). I suspect windows is
reporting the speed between it and your modem, not the line speed - I am
often wrong, though :-)

Andy.
