Windows Update, now cannot route thru wireless - why?

I ran into this months ago, could not resolve - well here it is again...

HP tablet pc with compaq WLAN 802.11b - wireless connected to Dell WAP
fine...do some updates from MS, then the HP cannot get the IP address from
firewall on other end of WAP. Even if I hard code the IP on the HP, cannot
ping nothing out there and yet the wireless setup on the XP Tablet edition
shows fully connected, full strength etc...all indicators it is connected
fine, just cannot do anything.

cannot ping the WAP, GW, nothing.

Removed Compaq WLAN driver, reinstalled with latest from compaq - still no
go. I have deleted the card over and over, let XP install, force an install
by the compaq drivers, you name it.

I took this PC to another office with wireless network - same thing,
connects fine as it indicates, but nothing is happening with IP traffic.

What the @#$@ is going on....is there a registry setting that is messing
this up from a windows update? What else can be done if I have already
reinstalled the WLAN driver multiple times.

Any ideas?

Is Wireless Zero Configuration Service running? Set it to Automatic. In
the wireless card properties, (Device manager, or Wireless Network
Connection), is WEP toggled? Is there a mangled passphrase? Clear it.
In the TCP/IP properties for the connection, is Disable DNS toggled?
Untoggle it. Disable the Internet Connection Firewall/Sharing service.

Let me know what you find.

After my first ordeal with a similar case months ago (6 hrs of wasted time),
and another 4 hours on this new one trying to find exactly how to fix it - I
resorted to system restore back prior to Windows Updates of which I am 98%
convinced it was the WAP update MS has up there. I installed all updates
but that and the enhannced networking update and it still works fine now.

I guess the WPA updates are not fully tested on all hardware and my trouble
months ago was an Orinoco Silver and this was an embedded Compaq WP200 in a
tablet PC.

I wish I could have figured what the WPA patch screwed up, but I gave up.

With regards to your questions, I have tried them all from fixed ip to DHCP,
alternate IP's, DNS fixed & not, there is no ICS running, no firewall, no
passphrase (this was a wide open WLAN - no security) have tried MS Wireless
config and manual - nothing seemed to kick this in gear. Long night with no
good answers.

If you have the special tablet edition of XP, that in itself might be
the problem. Others are reporting problems of all sorts with the tablet
OS, and the media center OS as well.

Not to be smart here, but this usually means some kind of mis-
configuation is happening. There could be improper usage of the NIC
protocols, FW blocking access, several other factors.

100% signal strength only means you have a solid connection between the
WAP and WNIC.

You can use a packet snuffer to see what's happening with the packets in
an attempt to determine the problem.

It could be as simple as using Netbios, IPX/SPX and TCP/IP protocols on
the WNIC.
