I have one computer using Ubuntu. The other computers are Windows XP. I
can see the Windows XP computers and access the shares from within Ubuntu,
but I cannot access any shares in Ubuntu from Windows. I can browse in
Windows Networks and see the Ubuntu computer, but I can't access any shared
folders.

What do I need to do? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Patty

I didn't install the Samba server software, just the basic samba stuff that
installed with Ubuntu when I tried to share a folder. Is that the same
thing?

Thanks so much!

No, you must install a samba server if you want to share Unix > Windows

Yes - Samba effectively has 3 useful parts:

smbclient to connect "by hand" to a random SMB share
smbfs to mount a remote SMB share onto the linux box
server to present SMB shares.

Cheers

It's all working now. Ubuntu installs samba when you try to share files, I
don't know that it's the full samba server, but it does install a version
of samba. Two things I needed to do to get it to work. Change all the
instances of Domain name to the Windows workgroup name and set upd a samba
user/password. Now it works. All my windows computers can see Ubuntu and
access any shared folders. And, Ubuntu sees and accesses Windows too.

Thanks again!

Patty
