We've moved our Win2k3 machine into a new office and setup
a new broadband connection.
The machine is connected to a router. The router has DHCP enabled,
and given the machine an internal IP Address of 192.168.1.64

The machine is called 'Gandalf' =)

If we open up a file browser window and type
\\Gandalf

The browser happily goes away and finds all the servers file shares.
If however we type
\\192.168.1.64

Windows displays the message
"Windows cannot find '\\192.168.1.64'. Check spelling....etc"

The machine can however ping 192.168.1.64

I'm a little lost. Windows Server isn't a strong field of mine!
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Cheers
Chris.

What happens when you remove the Proxy Settings from the Browser's
Connection Settings? You haven't said there was a proxy, but I'll bet there
is one configured in the Browser.

Reason:
IE doesn't know what an IP# is,...wouldn't know it if it tripped over
it,..in fact it does trip over it. It sees the "dots" in the number and
determines it to be a FQDN and then assusmes it is on the Internet and not
the LAN and therefore sends the request to the Proxy which doesn't know what
to do with it.

The lesson:
Never use IP#s in a browser URL whenever the browser has "proxy setting".
Browsers without proxy settings do not have this issue.
There are workaround that have limited success:

Intranet site is identified as an Internet site when you use an FQDN or an
IP address

This interface is set to get an IP from DHCP but is failing to do so.
Disable this Nic or leave it unpluged if it is not actually being used.
Make sure this nic is not above the other nic in the Binding Order.

This nic needs to be first in the binding order.
Net'Places-->Advanced from top menu--->Advanced Settings from dropdown
menu---> use side arrows at upper box to move this interface to the top of
the list.

DNS (as an FYI if nothing else):
All machines on the LAN need to use the AD/DNS and *none* other. Never the
ISP's DNS. The ISP's DNS should only appear in the AD/DNS's forwarders
list. The AD/DNS needs permission by the Firewall to make outbound
DNSqueries to the ISP's DNS.

Thanks for the tips, I've disabled the other NIC, and moved the active

However it's not resolved my problem.

Well I'm running out of ideas.
I assume you are trying to conect from another machine and not doing this on
the machine itself.

This may be grabbing at straws, but it is all that comes to mind at the
moment.
From a command prompt on another machine that has this repeatable
problem,... ping 192.168.1.64 and then immediately run "c:\ ARP -a
192.168.1.64".

It should return the MAC address,...make sure this MAC address matches the
MAC of the physical Nic on the server. If it does not then there is an IP
conflict on the LAN.

Apologies guys, problem existed with the user!

It was something simple File and Printer Sharing was turned
off for that NIC. The NIC in used must have got swapped over
when the machine was moved to the new location.

Turned it back on, and the machine is now visible.
Thanks for your help guys, Phillip especially.

Tired software developer thats not doing much software developing!
