Sounds like a DNS Search Suffix problem. Without WINS, whenever a computer
queries for a NETBIOS name, and in the absence of an LMHosts files, the
computer queries DNS in the order of the DNS Search Suffix Order as defined
under the TCP/IP properties of the first-bound network adapter. This all
assumes that you are in fact pointed at an internal DNS server supporting
your AD domain and not your ISP's DNS server.
