Thanks for the reply Robert.
As I did mention I am going to use a DDNS and because of your number 2 response that is why I mention I was going to go with PPTP initially. I went to the links that you provided but none of those links explain at all how to set this up?
When I set up the DDNS do I use the Same name that I use for the VPN Server or do I just add a reference to the name that I use at the DDNS somewhere in the server so if someone uses that name to get to my router it will then know to go to the server?
Any other help or more informative links to information that address my situation would be great.
Thanks,
Jeff

1. if you have dynamic IP, you can use DDNS.
2. You can setup L2TP/IPSec behind a router. However, you must have static public IP.if you setup IPSec.

Hi,
I am brand new to Windows Server 2003 and VPN. I am trying to learn this
and have been reading books and online articles. I am trying to simulate
setting up a Server as if it were being setup at a small business. Right
now I am just setting this up at home. My question/problem I am setting up
at home and I only have a Dynamic IP from my ISP. I have set up a computer
and installed server 2003, set-up a DC, with DHCP,and DNS running on it. I
got this part finally setup and working on my network (from what I can tell)
correctly. Now I am moving on to the next step of setting up a VPN that can
be accessed from remote location. From what I have read in most cases the
VPN server is setup with 2 Nic cards with one assigned an ip address of the
.local network and one with an out side ip address connect straigt to the
internet. I have read where this can be setup on a Server with only one Nic
card installed and with the Server behind the router, but in this case can
only be setup to use PPTP and not L2P/IPSec, but that is far as I can find
in articles. I can not find any article explaing just how to set every
thing up in this type of configuration. I am hoping someone can point me to
a good resource that might walk me thru this or be able to provide some
insight here.
My setup:
Dynamic Ip coming from ISP. ( I am going to setup an Account with
DynDns.org so I can use a name and make it like having a static IP)
LinkSys Router- This router provides NAT and Firewall and says will allow 1
VPN Tunnel. Inside the router under Advanced Routing Tab I can Enable
either PPTP or L2P passthru.
1 computer running Server 2003 as a DC. with one NIC installed. Running AD,
DHCP and DNS. Like I said earlier all this seems to be working fine.
3 other computers in house that can connect to the Domain, with no apparent
problems at this time.
Several questions.
When I set up the Account at dnyDns does the name I use There have to be the
same as the name of my VPN server? I was reading that the Server has to be
able to have its name broadcast to dns servers on the Internet in order to
be found. But I thought that one a request made it to the router/firewall
that it would then get routed to the correct place.
Do I need to setup Port Forward on the router or just Enable PPTP on router
and it will then take care of this part?
Sorry being a NEWBIE I think I have gotten myself more confussed by reading
everything I can find and trying to figure it out and am probably making it
harder than it needs to be.
I am to the point of just running the Remote Wizard and see what happens
from there but I thought I would give this a try first and see if someone
can give me some Pointers.
Thanks for the help.
