Windows Server 2003 Versions - Pre-purchase question

A client of mine is prepared to replace two of his Windows 2000 Advanced
Server boxes with Windows Server 2003 boxes. One box is his Domain
Controller (DNS, Active Directory) and one is his I.S.A. box. The rest of
the computers on his network are Windows 2000 Workstations.

I had believed that Windows 2000 Workstations wouldn't work right with a
Windows 2003 Server as the Domain Controller. Dell tells me that Microsoft
says it isn't a problem. Is that correct? Windows 2000 Workstations CAN
work correctly on a Windows 2003 domain?

If so, what is the minimum server version needed for these two boxes? What
server is the minimum necessary to run a Domain Controller with about 30
Active Directory users and 75 computers? What server is the minimum
necessary to run an ISA server for that network?

Any help with these questions is greatly appreciated!

Windows 2000 clients will work perfectly with W2k3 DCs, there is no problem
here.

If you are asking about hardware requirements, then it depends on your
environment, but based on the information you've provided, any hardware that
deserves to be named "server" nowadays will be ok for you.

Dmitry,

Thanks for the reassurance that they will work with a 2003 Domain
Controller. That has had me pretty nervous.

The standing question, then, is which of the versions to get. Will Windows
2003 Server Standard Edition work for a Domain controller and for an I.S.A.
server (assuming separate boxes for each)?

Thanks again!

Yes, it will work. The only limitation here is that a Web Edition cannot be
a DC (though it may be a domain member server).

The final answer, however, will depend on your requirements. Standard and
Enterprise editions have many differences in terms of functionality support,
such as clustering, hardware support and so on. You should choose if you
need this functionality or not. And of course, a direct version upgrade (W2k
server to Standard edition W2k3, W2k Advanced server to Enterprise edition)
gives you a hint.

Dmitry,

Thanks! That does help clear it up! I don't think they're using clustering
and hardware support so I'll recommend Standard Edition for now. If he
really needs more we can update then. Thanks again!
