Hi

I'm running a Windows Server 2003 network with just Windows 2000 and
Windows XP clients.

I now want to disable NetBIOS and WINS in DHCP for the clients. (I've
tested one machine with NetBIOS disabled manually and it seems to work
OK, printers, antivirus software etc). This should not effect the
server configuration as their settings are static (I'm told I need
NetBIOS for Exchange etc).

Does anybody know what I need to do under DHCP manager?

My current settings are

044 WINS/NBNS Servers, Standard, [WINS IP ADDRESS]
046 WINS/NBT Node Type, Standard, 0x8

Do I merely delete these settings, or alter them?

I've hunted around for relevant documentation and no luck so far.

Many Thanks!

Alex

Start the DHCP management snapin. Right click on Server Options and select
configure. Go to the Advanced tab. Change the vendor class dropdown to
Microsoft Options. Select option 001. If this doesn't work out for you,
just remove option 001.

Thanks Neo for your help!

I did exactly what you said.

Also:

* Deleted IP address lease of my client computer

* Made sure default option was selected on the netbios settings of the
computer (obtain NetBIOS setting from DHCP).

* Rebooted.

* The node type according to IPCONFIG/ALL is still hybrid.

Are the changes supposed to be instant (in which case this didn't
work), do I have to wait for a period of time (how long?), or should I
just restart the DHCP service?

Cheers!

Alex

When you do an ipconfig /all, the lan (network) connecting portion should
have a blurb about netbios being disabled. (i think it displays either
before or after the WINS server addresses.)

Don't know DHCP needs to be recycled for the new option to take effect. If
you do a release/renew and the blurb doesn't show on your win2k/xp/2003 box,
then i would say dhcp does need to be recycled.

Thanks.

Well I've restarted the service, and some 12 hours later clients are
still not picking up the NETBIOS disabled setting from DHCP (even if I
delete their lease, restart their machine, and/or restart the DHCP
service). They still show as hybrid. Clients point to the DHCP server
for NetBIOS settings (under Network settings/TCP/IP/Advanced/WINS,
Default is selected).

In DHCP manager I now have (in Windows 2003 server SBS):

044 WINS/NBNS Servers, Standard, [WINS IP ADDRESS]
046 WINS/NBT Node Type, Standard, 0x8
001 Microsoft Disable Netbios Option, 0x1

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Alex

Just because it shows hybrid doesn't mean that the setting didn't take
effect. So are you saying that your Windows 2000/XP machines are not
showing the blurb that netbios is disabled? (Actually, post an IPConfig
/all from one of the workstations. Feel free to remove the IP addresses if
you wish since I'm looking for the netbios disabled statement from ipconfig
/all)

Try changing the value for 001 Microsoft Disable Netbios Option to 0x2.

Thanks I'll try this tomorrow. NetBIOS is definately not disabled at
present (I'm familiar with what is displayed with IPCONFIG/ALL because
I can disable NETBIOS from the client end).

Many thanks for your help and I'll post soon.

Alex

OK I've tried it, restarted the DHCP server service, renewing the
