our computer guy that we can not share a printer that is
not hooked up to our dedicated server. the printer was
hooked up to our computer at the front desk and we were
able to share before when that machine was our server at
our old office now thatwe have a dedicated server it will
not let us share that printer. can anybody help. thank

Hi - you can share anything you want, but you need local admin rights to
share a printer on a workstation. Better option might be to see whether you
can use it with a print server device (like an external HP JetDirect, etc)
so you can assign it an IP address & share it from the server.

Don't know where this idea comes from. Just about any Windows computer can
share its printer, even in a domain environment. If the computer is not
joined to the domain because its OS is less than Windows 2000, it can be
kind of a pain, but even Windows 98 can publish shared printers in Active
directory - See:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;234619

Windows 2000 Professional makes an excellent print server - see:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...e_prn_qlsa.asp

There might be some administrative or other reason for having the Server
manage all print jobs, but this is not because client machines are unable to
share their printers.
