We've recently been infromed by our core software provider that we will have
to begin moving to a XP/2003 platform from our current Windows 2000 palform.
They also inform us that shortly Vista will be their tetsing platform. What
my fear is that we will migrate to 2003 and then 6 months later we will be
forced to go to the Vista platform. What I'm really looking for is some
information regrading what the hardware requiremnts for 2003 are and what
they will be for when vista os is released as well as what Longhorn server
will require. I'm trying to plan for the requiremnts for both if we have to
replace hardware.

Also is it possible to do a staged migration from 2000 to a 2003 domain.
Can I migrate the domain one site at a time or do I have to do everyy site at
the same time. Basically is there some form of a mixed mode domain that will
support 2000 and 2003 dc as I upgrade acrooss our company

You can add Windows Server 2003 DCs to a Windows 2000 domain:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325379/en-us

When you do this the domain functional level is retained unless and until it
is manually raised:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322692#E0AE0ACAAA

Vista both requires and benefits from more powerful hardware:

x

Don't know about Longhorn Server.

Also keep in mind Vista workstation is not due out til 1st quarter 2007,
server may not be out to late 2007. So you have time. Also I would not roll
out Vista on a company network until bugs are worked out. Usually you want
to wait until the first service pack.

Just a thought,

Hello ,

Thank you for posting.

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: You want to know the
hardware requirements of Windows Server 2003/Vista/Longhorn server. If I'm
off base, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks for Doug and Louis' detailed information.

For the hardware requirements of Windows Server 2003, please refer to the
link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...s/default.mspx

For the hardware requirements of Windows Vista, please refer to the link
below:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/win...e/vistarpc.msp
x

There is no hardware requirements of Windows Server "Longhorn" now.

For migration form Windows 2000 to 2003 domain, You can add Windows Server
2003 DCs to a Windows 2000 domain.
Please refer to the following information:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...k/default.mspx

Wish these information helps.

Sincerely,
Kenxl Zou
