Hi!

This is the current situation: i have a machine running Linux (RedHat
8.0), a laptop (SuSE 8.2) and a windows xp machine - currently, my sister's
pc - on the same network. The ADSL router acts as a gateway and the net is
delivered to all the pc's. This far so good. Now, the idea is to create a
network environment like if all the computers where running Windows XP.. On
other words, there is a listing of all the computers on the network on a
specific workgroup (this case Home) and every computer can set its own
share folders, printers,etc...

Now, i've installed and worked with Samba, but this is quite confusing,
because this, besides including the Linux machine on the Windows network,
is also creating a SMB server, which i believe is useless.

So, resuming, the idea is:

Which software do i need, what settings do i need to change (etc..) such
that:
- Windows can see and enter Linux pc's (currently i can see the Linux
machine on the network, but i can't access it.. it says i don't have enough
previliges);
- Linux can see and share files with Linux pc's;
- Linux can see and share files with Windows pc's.

To all the time wasted on replying to me, a big thanks and best regards!

I've got a Mandrake V9 Linux machine working as part of a network with
an ME, XP Home and a handheld pocketpc.

The Linux machine has Samba server running to enable all the other
machines to see it (Not necessary for Internet Sharing) and it can see
all other machines except the handheld.

If you want windows to see a linux box, you need to correctly set up a
samba server. That's what enables linux to look like a windows machine.

You have to specifically configure which portions of the file system you
want visible, and who can access them, etc. You also have to set up smb
users.

If you only want to see windows shares on your linux box, then all you
need is smbclient.

http://www.samba.org - the docs are quite extensive.

Check out O'Reilly's Using Samba 2nd Edition
http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/toc.html

it contains everything you need to know.
