Windows killed my network?

Just a couple days ago I got a Dell Inspiron 5100 with a Dell Truemobile
802.11b/g PCI card installed. I have cable modem service and a D-Link DI-624
router.

Everything has been working fine until this morning. Today I cannot connect
to the wireless network, even when I have the laptop in the same room with
the router.

It suddenly occurred to me that last night I started up the Windows
automatic updater which downloaded a ton of "critical" and security updates.
Could one of those have killed my laptop's adapter?

Thanks,
Barry

Funny you mention that. I had similar problems in the last could days, on a
system that worked for over a year! I even went out and bought another
access point, no change.

Yes could be. I noticed the other day that my wifes laptop had had a
new driver for the NIC installed which wasn't the correct one.

If you have XP, just go to the driver and roll it back.

My advice is to -never, ever- allow Windows to update a device driver
of any kind. Some of my worst system problems stemmed from doing so.

Everything from the device going dead, to other devices going dead, to
full system crashes. The first time this happened it was a video
driver as I recall, ended up doing a full system rebuild (this was
before Restore Points).

I Windows thinks I need a new driver, I go to the website for the
device manufacturer and look for one.

FWIW

Had same problem as David Taylor. D-Link(s) AG650 and 650+ worked in
a Dell 1100 for months and stopped working with Code 12 (not enough
resources),
probably after a Windows update. Updates didn't replace the card's driver(s)
though.
Reinstalled drivers, flashed to latest bios, shut off nearly every other
device, repaired
XP with file deletion/replace technique. No joy. Had to switch to a USB
device which
is very hot and much slower. I'll post anything that might solve (D-Link
support isn't.)
