I purchased a HP Windows Home Server system, where one of the advertised features enables you to remotely connect to the desktop of your home computers.

I have the WHS system setup, and can access the (WHS) server remotely (from outside my network), however all the computers on my home network are listed as:

Windows Vista Home Premium Edition - * Not supported on this operating system.

I understand the Remote Desktop Connection (host) is crippled in the Vista "Premium" version, however I was under the impression (via all the advertising hype) that Windows Home Server, would enable this feature on Vista Home Premium versions.

Now I am being told by Microsoft that the Windows HOME Server remote access does not work with the Windows HOME versions of Vista, including their "Premium" version. The WHS team claims they can not do anything about this, as it is an issue with Windows Vista - internal finger pointing.

Somehow we need to get the issue escalated to Ballmer or Gates level. I'm sure they would understand this major disconnect in their product marketing.

Your best bet is probably going to be the MSDN managed groups or the partner
groups.

https://partner.microsoft.com/

or maybe even via HP

According to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...ns/choose.mspx
remote desktop is a feature provided with Business or Ultimate SKU's.

daveg - I understand, but why would MS market a HOME server, that doesn't
work with the HOME versions of their Windows Vista? 99% of HOME users are
going to have Vista HOME versions, why would you limit this feature to Vista
Business versions?

ST3V3, I found the following documentation:

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...e%20Access.pdf

You can connect only a computer that is "Available for connection" and
that is running one of the following operating systems:
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Windows XP Tablet Edition with SP2
Windows Vista Ultimate ,Business, or Enterprise

I think what they are saying is that WHS provides the functionaity to
forward/connect remote desktop connections to clients on your internal
network. However, this is a feature of WHS from a routing
perspective, does not change the SKU and feature on your clients, so
they have to meet the prereq's.

Many customers are running legacy versions of the OS like XP
Professional which has this feature or Vista Ultimate or push
customers to purchase/upgrade their clients to Ultimate/Business,
etc. This is one method to get customers to purchase higher end SKU's
containing all the features available to the OS.
