I'm running Win98SE on a network with three other
computers (Linksys router and DSL connection, FWIW). On a
regular basis, a couple of hours after I start my
computer, opening up Windows Explorer (either clicking on
My Computer or using the Windows+E keys) causes Explorer
to hang while trying to display the information about one
of the mapped network drives. It never happens immediately
after startup, but only a couple of hours later. I haven't
been able to discern a series of steps in between that
triggers it.
Once Windows Explorer hangs, I have to use the Task
Manager to shut it down, and at that point I can't get the
computer to shut down properly; there is always a RunDLL32
process that remains active which I have to terminate from
the Task Manager, after which I can use the Task
Manager/Shut Down button to turn the system off.
The lockup can also happen when I open up a file open
dialog box in Outlook Express and other programs, if
they're going to display the status of a network drive. If
I just display the status of my local drive, I'm OK.
I've had this behavior ever since I upgraded the computer
from Win95 about 6 months ago. Any suggestions? I'm no
novice with networking, but this has me stumped.
