Hi

I have a problem with a rather old PC. It's running Win 98SE. I
installed a compatible wireless nic. When I' try to connect, I can
access the wireless router, but I'm not getting any IP adress. (DNS
setting is set to atomatically obtain adress from server). That is, I
get 0.0.0.0 not an expected 192.168.1.40. I have also tried to
manually configure the DNS settings, but to no help.
I'm not very familiar with 98SE, so there could be some basics I'm
missing.

I could not find an equivialent of the XP Network Connections where I
can see the LAN Connections. I suppose the Controll Panel -> Network
would be helpfull. Here I find an additional card (NIC) 'Card for
remote access' (I'ts in norwegian so i tried to transate it but I'm
not sure whats the excact english term). I this card necessary? If I
removes it I can no longer do an ipconfig.

Does any one have a clue?

Regards
Odd M

First check you installed the wireless nic okay. Right click my
computer -> properties -> device manager

The nic will be listed under network adaptors if it is installed okay.

If this is okay, the problem will likely be down to misconfigured
encryption settings or maybe you need to configure the router to
accept connections from the mac address of the new wireless nic.

Try switching encryption off temporarily to see if you can get a
connection.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I do not have any MAC filtering active. So
thats not the case. Now I tried to temporarly disable encryption, both
on the router and the computer. Unfourtunatley this is still a
problem.

The wireless nic seems OK in the device manager, and is listed under
network adaptors. The wireless nic status icon in the sys tray
indicated a connection. I do not know if this means I'm connected ....
If I try to connect to the man next door, where I do not know the WEP
key, the icon reports that I'm not connected.

Any other sugestions?

Regards Odd Morten

From your description it appears that the wireless aspect of the
connection is working okay.

Win98 (unlike winxp) does not have built in support for wireless
networking so you must be using third party software to control the
network connection and consequently any settings must be made within
that software. Leave the control panel -> network settings alone.
