Windows 98SE - Red "X" on network drive in Windows Explorer

I am having a problem in an office environment:

On one station, I have mapped a network drive to x:\\server\c and asked it
to reconnect on startup. The network drive works properly. On some bootups,
Windows 98SE does not show "reconnectiong to mapped drive..." and in
explorer the mapped drive is displayed with a red "X" on the connection.
Upon double-clicking this drive, the red "X" disappears and all functions
are restored.

While the red "X" is shown, mapped drive is not valid and Internet
Connection Sharing does not work.

I have been trying to find a solution for the last 3 months.

Only thing I found is using a start-up script may help (IE: NET USE
X:\\SERVER\C).

Thank you.
