I have a problem getting my laptop to use Internet sharing and hope someone
out there can help.
I have a desktop with an internal adsl modem and I have configured it with a
network card to connect to my laptop and this works fine, however I can't
access the internet from the laptop, the desk top is running windows 98se
and the laptop windows ME.
I have set up internet sharing on the desktop but no joy getting it to work.

Not the most helpful suggestion, but ditch Win ME from the laptop and
switch to 98, 2000 or XP.

Win ME was a disaster released to plug a temporary gap in Microsoft's
product range.

You can get an upgrade to XP Home for £89 from PC World, or you can
get an OEM edition for £69 from www.simply.co.uk and it is money well
spent.

Hi John,
I have 2 Win98 PCs sharing the Internet using a proxy server, as Win 98
First Edition didn't have ICS. The proxy server was free from
http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/ . Ccpoxy is simply installed on the PC
with the ADSL modem and for me it's performant and stable. See my
configuration at:
http://www.asdk90.dsl.pipex.com/pcco.../slide0001.htm

Maybe this could work for you where ICS doesn't.

No, Win ME is a distinct improvement on Win98SE, especially in its ICS
facility.
It happens to start and run faster than XP, too, due to less bloatware
and economic memory use - I use it for that reason as default on my
multi-boot, despite have two Linux systems and XP there!

In any case, it is his desktop which has the ICS problem - WinME would
help there, but a proxy or software router would be best solution,
other than putting XP on it (only if it has 128Mb or more RAM).

My experience of it has been one of unreliability. Guess we will have
to agree to differ
